VHS Give Aways

Technology is improving at almost exponential speed.  It really wasn't that long ago we had books in our library on audio cassette tapes.

Within the last ten years, we deleted those from our collection because they were rarely checked out.  People preferred books on CD rather than audio cassette.

Now it appears another of our friends may soon be leaving us.  We browsed our VHS shelves the other day and were very surprised to find the majority of the tapes had not been circulated in the last two years!  That meant it was time to "weed" and we pulled a LOT of them.  The good news for you is we are giving them away for free but we don't know how long they will last.  You can find them while we have them on the back of the return cart by the circulation desk.

Any new videos we purchase will be DVD format.  An advantage to those is they are thinner so we gained some shelf space.

Writing about this took me down Memory Lane.  I remember our first VCR.  We purchased it about 31 years ago.  Our older daughter was still a toddler.  Do you remember how exciting it was to be able to record TV shows to watch again at a later time?  One of the cutest stories was when my inlaws had visited and saw the VCR for the first time.  Bill had begun recording a show and his mom said (loudly enough for all to hear), "You all be quiet now so we don't hear you on the tape."  She was unaware it didn't have an eternal microphone and if it had, of course her voice would have been recorded.   Do you have any favorite VCR/VHS memories in storage?

24,000

Cindy Goodson is the recipient of the $24 Lifeway Gift Card - - which means we have circulated 24,000 titles in 2011.  We reached that goal on Sunday.  You may have noticed that we check out about 500 books a month.

Remember we still are weeding the shelves so that means we have books to give away if you want to browse.
