Last week was VBS (Vacation Bible School) at our church. Here is the sanctuary without children. The theme was aviation. Do you see the rope lights by the chairs? They are supposed to mimic runway lights at an airport.
When classes are over for the day, the parents who are not teachers line up to pick up their children. They find the banner for their youngest child's class. Runners are behind each banner.
The parents have been given a card from the children's department with the names of their children. The card is given to a runner who goes into the sanctuary to 'retrieve and deliver' the children to the parents. If you don't have the card, you are not allowed to take the child without going through some identification process and possibly a phone call. This is for security purposes to keep the children safe. I don't know the exact number but some said we had around 1,000 students and teachers in attendance last week.
Many families come into the library after picking up their children to check out more books or to cash in their tickets for one of these prizes. All ages love 'shopping in our store"! As mentioned in a previous blog, the numbers on the boards match up to bins in our back office.
Currently there are 598 children enrolled in our summer reading program. We know that our church's daycare has fifty others reading, too. They will be added to the total next month.
